School Nurse Services

Each school in the Thomas County School System has at least one full-time Registered Nurse on staff. All nurses are licensed by the State of Georgia, certified as BLS CPR Instructors by the American Heart Association, and practice in accordance with the Georgia Nurse Practice Act.

School nursing is a specialized field that supports student health, academic success, and overall well-being. In Thomas County, keeping students healthy, safe, in school, and ready to learn is a top priority of our nursing team.

Our school nurses provide a wide range of essential services, including:

  • Assessing and treating student illnesses and injuries

  • Administering medications

  • Monitoring and managing chronic health conditions and communicable diseases

  • Conducting health screenings

  • Identifying students at risk and providing health education and counseling

  • Referring students and families to appropriate healthcare or community resources

School nurses also serve as first responders during on-campus emergencies and work closely with local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors. They play a critical role in ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal health regulations.

Parent/Guardian Responsibility:
If your child has a medical condition that may affect them during the school day, please inform the school nurse as soon as possible. The nurse will work with you, your child’s teachers, and other staff members to develop an individualized health care plan to support your child’s needs.

When Are School Nurses Available?

School nurses are available not only on all student attendance days, but also during pre-planning and Open House events. If your child has a health concern that needs attention before the first day of school, please contact your school nurse during pre-planning to schedule a meeting.

Medications may be dropped off during Open House or by appointment during pre-planning if prior arrangements are made with the school nurse. Please note that the first week of school is an especially busy time in the clinics, and there may be longer wait times for submitting medications or meeting with the nurse. Early communication is encouraged to ensure your child’s health needs are met efficiently.
