Every Teacher is a Reading Teacher
In grades K-2, our 2 1/2 hour balanced literacy block places a focus on the direct instruction of phonics as well as fluency. Students in grades K-4 are screened three times a year using Acadience to support the foundational skills of becoming fluent readers of not only literary text, but informational text as well.  In the Thomas County School System, content-related literature is embedded into every content course beginning in fifth grade. Students not only read major literary works in English and language arts classes, they also read content related novels or biographies in every class including science and social studies.

Today, we live in a technology and media-driven environment, marked by access to an abundance of information, rapid changes in technology tools and the ability to collaborate.

Students in Thomas County have a support system that helps them develop the multi-dimensional abilities that will be required of them as they navigate their future in the globally competitive information age.
